요한일서 2:2; 4:10에 나오는 ‘힐라스모스’(i`lasmo,j)를 대부분 한글성경 번역본들은 “화목제물”로 번역하고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 여기에 사용된 힐라스모스의 번역의 문제점을 검토하고 이에 대한 대안적 번역을 제안하는 것이다.
이 연구를 위해서 힐라스모스와 이의 동족어에 대한 언어학적인 연구와 구약의 제의 용어(화목제물, 속죄제물)에 대한 신학적 고찰을 병행하였다. 연구의 절차는 먼저 요한일서 2:2; 4:10의 번역본 비교 및 문맥 분석을 행한 후에 힐라스모스의 언어학적 분석의 순서로 진행했다. 이어서 구약성경에서 화목제물과 속죄제물의 제의적 의미를 살핀 후에 힐라스모스에 대한 적합한 대안적 번역을 제안하였다.
마지막에는 영어와 독일어 성경들의 번역과 비교 검토함으로써 이 새로운 번역의 적합성을 검토하였다. 새로운 번역이 받아들여지면 요한일서의 힐라스모스의 의미가 그리스도의 속죄 사역의 의미를 더욱 보강하게 될 것이다.

The Problem of Translating 'Hilasmos' (i`lasmo,j) in 1 John (2:2; 4:10) in Light of Linguistics and Sacrificial System of the Old Testament

The majority of the Korean Bible translations render 'hilasmos' (1 John 2:2; 4:10) into "peace offering." The goal of this study is to investigate the problem of this translation of hilasmos and then suggest an alternative translation for this word.
For this study, the author has carried out a theological study on the offering-related words in the Old Testament (peace offering and sin offering) as well as a linguistic study on the word hilasmos and its cognate words.
The process for this study is as follows. First, a comparison of Korean Bible translations of 1 John 2:2; 4:10 and an analysis of their contexts were followed by a linguistic study of hilasmos. After investigating the cultic meaning of the peace offering and the sin offering in the Old Testament, a proper translation of hilasmos was suggested.
Finally, an analysis of English and German translations was conducted to make sure the validity of the new translation. Once this new translation is accepted, the new meaning of hilasmos will support the significance of Christ' atoning work in 1 John.
